Germany's 2025 Budget Debate Kicks Off Amid Controversy

The final debate on the 2025 budget law is set to take place in the Bundestag from September 15, with a vote planned for September 19. The weeks leading up to this event promise intense deliberations, as various political groups voice their concerns and proposals.

The Left politician, Bartsch, has been vocal about her criticism of the federal government's financial strategies. She argues that the government is incurring high debts to finance what she terms as "the largest armament in the history of the Federal Republic."

On the other hand, the AfD parliamentary group leader, Espendiller, has stated that the total new debt from the core budget and special assets amounts to 143 billion euros. The AfD has also proposed reducing payments to the EU by 18 billion euros and sees a savings potential of 14 billion euros per year in the citizens' allowance alone.

Moreover, the AfD has submitted around 1,000 amendments in the budget committee, all of which were rejected. One of their more controversial proposals includes the complete stoppage of military aid to Ukraine.

The debates on the budget for the current year have been significantly delayed due to the federal election in February and the change of government in May. As a result, the so-called provisional budget management is currently in effect for this year.

The Green parliamentary group leader, Schäfer, referred to "probably the longest budget procedure in the history of our country" on Friday. Despite the challenges, the minister who drafted the budget for the year 2025 is Lars Klingbeil, the Federal Minister of Finance of Germany.

As the debate unfolds, it remains to be seen how the proposals will be received and whether any compromises will be made to pass the 2025 budget law. The upcoming weeks promise to be an exciting time in German politics.
