AAAS & ChillMine Partner for Solar-Powered Data Center in Botswana
AAAS Energy and ChillMine have joined forces to develop a solar-powered data center campus in Botswana. The project, part of AAAS's vision to connect sustainable energy with the digital economy, aims to cater to global hyperscalers and large-scale cloud providers.
The data center, set to be constructed at the Leupane Energy Hub near Palpye, will have a significant capacity of up to 500MW of solar and 200MW of gas-fired power generation. This will serve AI computing and energy-intensive operations, providing a unique value proposition for technology companies expanding into Africa.
The project comes after ChillMine, founded in 2018, signed a similar MoU with an independent power producer in Zimbabwe for solar-powered data centers. The company's identity remains somewhat mysterious, with no public information about who registered the domain name 'chillmine.io' in December 2024.
AAAS Energy and ChillMine's collaboration is set to bring a substantial solar-powered data center to Botswana, supporting the growth of the digital economy in Africa. The project's scale and sustainable energy focus are expected to attract global technology companies to the region.
