The Whopping Charges
With the Hamburg public prosecutor's office in full swing, six top executives of Alanta Health Group face charges in the regional court. They are being accused of bribing doctors to prescribe cancer drugs, known as cytostatics, manufactured by their own pharmacies.
The charges against these six individuals include billing fraud amounting to an astounding €75 million. The Alanta Health Group however, has refuted these accusations, stating their confidence in clearing their names in court.
Fraudulent Manoeuvres
The accused apparently took over the Muehlenberg district clinic, using it as an operator for numerous medical care centers. The aim, as per the prosecutor's office, was to gain as many customers as possible for their medication preparations, bypassing legal restrictions on collaborations between pharma service providers and contract doctors.
Through questionable tactics, they submitted 340 prescriptions for non-reimbursable drugs to statutory health insurers, resulting in payments far exceeding €75 million.
The Long Arm of Investigation
The public prosecutor's office has been investigating pharmacists, doctors, and pharmaceutical managers for years now. In 2019, during raids, over 6,000 file folders and around 100 data carriers were seized from the Alanta Health Group, Zytoservice GmbH, and the Muehlenberg district clinic.
Aside from the six executives, investigations against 47 doctors are still ongoing, though the proceedings against them have been separated, as confirmed by the public prosecutor's office spokeswoman.
