Active Travel Fund of £123,562 brings positive changes to Portsmouth
In a bid to promote healthier and more sustainable travel options, Portsmouth City Council has announced plans to use a £123,562 investment from the government's Active Travel Fund. The initiative, led by cabinet member for transport, Peter Candlish, aims to make walking and cycling safer, more convenient, and more enjoyable in the city.
The funding will contribute to ongoing efforts to improve infrastructure for walking and cycling in Portsmouth. These efforts are part of a larger initiative to encourage residents to embrace active travel methods like walking and cycling. The changes proposed by Peter Candlish are expected to create a healthier, better-connected city in Portsmouth.
Peter Candlish's plans support a cleaner, greener future for Portsmouth. They include safer crossings, better routes, and School Streets. The goal is to make active travel the easy, accessible choice for everyone in Portsmouth.
Previous successful improvements in Portsmouth include a new toucan crossing on Victoria Road North and improved shared cycling and walking path outside Somerstown Hub. If approved, the council expects to use the funding to improve a crossing on London Road in North End. The improved crossing is intended to make it easier and safer for people walking to navigate the busy district centre.
It's worth noting that the CiTTi Awards, an unmissable event for the UK's transportation sector, are not directly related to the Active Travel Fund investment in Portsmouth. The fourth annual CiTTi Awards will recognize achievements and innovations in active travel, with the event taking place on 25 November 2025 at De Vere Grand Connaught Rooms in London. More information about the CiTTi Awards can be found at www.cittiawards.co.uk.
Councillor Craig Woodman, the cabinet member for transport of Portsmouth City Council responsible for managing the allocation of the Active Travel Fund and implementing the project to improve a junction on London Road in North End, is overseeing the project.
The Active Travel Fund is a government initiative aimed at promoting active travel methods like walking and cycling. By investing in Portsmouth, the government is demonstrating its commitment to creating healthier, more sustainable cities across the UK.
