Additional advancement in locomotion technology
Neuss, Germany - Construction on the second phase of the Radschnellweg 5 (RS 5) commenced on November 6, with Oliver Krischer, Minister for Environment, Nature Conservation and Transport, Mayor Reiner Breuer, and Beigeordner for Planning and Mobility, Christoph Höltgers, in attendance. This initiative aims to enhance cycling between Neuss, Düsseldorf, and Langenfeld, contributing to the region's mobility transition.
The section of the RS 5 located within Neuss spans roughly 2.5 kilometers, beginning at Hammer Landstraße, traversing Langemarckstraße, and Stresemannallee to the Willy-Brandt-Ring intersection. The route offers direct access to the Landesgartenschau 2026 site, facilitating cycling to the event. Projected completion for the second construction phase is slated for February 2026, timed perfectly before the event's start.
Christoph Höltgers noted that the development will also include the Hammfeld area, including a new mixed-use neighborhood with over 1,000 new apartments. The RS 5 will offer a comfortable and safe connection from this new district to the Neuss city center and the region.
Approximately 29,000 people commute daily between Neuss and Düsseldorf (as of 2023), and will benefit from the new connection when it is completed. The initial construction phase on Neuss city territory was wrapped up in the summer of 2024 and is now open to the public.
The second phase's construction will commence in the vicinity of the intersection Hammer Landstraße / Langemarckstraße / Danziger Straße. As of November 7, 2024, Hammer Landstraße will be fully closed at Derendorfweg intersection. Alternative routes for accessing the city center, Hansa, Danziger, and industrial streets include Stresemannallee and Langemarckstraße. The harbor will remain accessible during the entire construction period. The construction site will gradually shift towards Stresemannallee up to Schanzenstraße. The majority of the reconstruction in the festival site area is expected to be concluded by the time of the Neuss Bürger-Schützenfest 2025.
