In the break of dawn in Busia County, Kenya, 10-year-old Angela Wanjiru battles yet another bout of malaria - a cycle all too familiar to the region's families. Ghana and Sierra Leone are leading the charge, employing drones armed with artificial intelligence (AI) to hunt down mosquito breeding sites and eliminate them before they wreak havoc. These drones, equipped with AI-enabled cameras, patrol fields, wetlands, and riverbanks, scanning for standing water where mosquitoes lay eggs. Upon identifying an infestation, the drones deposit larvicide at the source before the insects hatch.
This innovative initiative, supported by Japanese start-up SORA Technology, is proving effective. SORA Technology co-founder and CEO Yosuke Kaneko believes the idea sprang from his own experiences in Africa. "I was horrified to see so many children still succumbing to preventable and curable diseases," he says. "By integrating AI and aerial monitoring, we hope to put an end to this tragic cycle."
Health officials echo the sentiment, including Dr. Margaret Njeri, an epidemiologist in Nairobi. "We've relied on bed nets and medication for years. However, with growing resistance to drugs and insecticides, we need a game-changer. This technology could just be that," she adds.
