The Federal Ministry of Agriculture, under the leadership of Agriculture Minister Alois Rainer, has made a significant policy change regarding the menu for official events. This change, announced in the "Bild" newspaper, will see the inclusion of meat and fish in addition to the existing vegetarian options, marking a departure from the previous vegetarian-only policy introduced by his predecessor, Cem Özdemir (Greens).

Minister Rainer, a trained butcher himself, has expressed a preference for regional products to be used in the meals. However, he emphasises that this policy change does not alter the ministry's commitment to sustainability, nutritional quality, and the inclusion of plant-based options. The menu for official events will now offer a variety of choices to cater to different dietary habits, including vegetarian and vegan diets.

Alois Rainer's policy change aligns with the 2024 Federal Food Strategy, which prioritises health, environmental sustainability, and innovation in food systems. This strategy, backed by the German Nutrition Society (DGE), encourages eating "colourfully, healthily, and sustainably with a focus on plant-based food". The policy change also receives scientific advisory endorsement from the Federal Ministry’s Scientific Advisory Board on Agricultural Policy (WBAE), which advocates an "ideology-free" approach that integrates plant-based, fermentation-based, and cultivated meat alternatives alongside conventional products.

Compared to Minister Cem Özdemir's time, Alois Rainer's period has expanded the policy scope to integrate more explicit sustainability and alternative protein diversification as a government priority. While Özdemir’s policies laid the groundwork with nutritional guidance and consumer information tools, Rainer's tenure shows more focus on diversifying protein sources and building a sustainable food system aiming toward 2050 goals outlined in the Federal Government’s Food Strategy.

It is important to note that this policy change does not specify any new regulations or requirements for the quality or origin of the food served at official events. The change in menu is expected to be implemented in the future at the Federal Ministry of Agriculture's official events. Minister Rainer also clarified that he does not intend to dictate personal eating habits, including the meat-heavy eating habits of his party chairman, Markus Söder.

In conclusion, Alois Rainer's policy change at the Federal Ministry of Agriculture signifies a shift towards a more flexible approach to official event catering, while maintaining the commitment to sustainability, nutritional quality, and plant-based options. This change marks a continuity and broadening in policy emphasis from Özdemir to Rainer, from informational labeling and consumer guidance towards active integration of novel sustainable food systems and protein diversification. Minister Rainer also emphasises that he does not wish to initiate a "culture war" on plates or in refrigerators regarding dietary choices.

EC countries could benefit from adopting similar approaches to vocational training in the field of sustainable food systems, as demonstrated by the Federal Ministry of Agriculture's commitment to integrating alternative protein sources in their official events. This initative aligns with the industry's financial investment in innovative food technologies and sustainable practices, fostering a future-oriented approach to the global food industry.
