In a revealing report by the Statistical Office of North Rhine-Westphalia, known as IT.NRW, changes in household spending patterns in 2020 have been highlighted. The data shows a notable shift in how private households in the region allocated their resources, particularly in the areas of food and catering services.

One of the most striking findings is the increase in spending on food. Across various household types, there was a general trend of higher food expenditure in 2020 compared to the previous year. For single-person households, the total spent on food increased by €46, while couples without children and households with minor children saw an increase of around €46 and €35 respectively.

However, a contrasting picture emerges when we look at spending on catering services. In 2020, the average monthly spending by North Rhine-Westphalian private households on catering services dropped significantly, with a decrease of €33 compared to the previous year. This trend was observed across all household types, with single-person households spending €26 less on restaurants and bars, and households with minor children spending a total of €35 less on catering services.

The report also reveals that single-person households adjusted their spending within the food category. While they spent €26 less on restaurants and bars, they compensated by spending €12 more on food, drinks, and tobacco. Similarly, couples without children saw an increase of €46 in their food budget, but a decrease of around €39 in their catering expenses.

It is important to note that these findings are based on general knowledge up to 2024, and specific figures for North Rhine-Westphalia might vary. Detailed data on household spending, separated by household type, would require access to regional statistical offices, consumer expenditure reports, or household budget surveys. For precise and detailed figures, it is recommended to consult the aforementioned sources.

  1. Despite the decline in spending on catering services, personal-finance trends indicate an increased interest in food-and-drink expenditure, as single-person households adjusted their budget to spend €12 more on food, drinks, and tobacco.
  2. In light of the significant decrease in spending on catering services, the shift towards personal-finance management can be observed, as households in North Rhine-Westphalia changed their spending patterns in 2020, allocating additional resources to food and drink, ultimately leading to increased expenditure in these areas.
