The craft scene in Germany presents a slightly rosier picture. The Central Association of German Crafts (ZDH), as reported by the German Press Agency, conducted a business climate survey that shows a touch of optimism among artisan businesses. "Craft businesses are sending out positive vibes with their business expectations for the first time in a while," said Holger Schwannecke, ZDH's General Secretary.
So, what's fueling this optimism? A change in politics, of course! Expectations are sky-high for the new coalition government. "Minimizing bureaucracy, stable energy prices, and conducive investment conditions must no longer be mere promises," warned Schwannecke. Inaction could quickly erode the slight optimism of the businesses. "The craft industry is ready, willing, and eager to move forward," the association stated.

The business climate survey surveyed nearly 23,000 businesses, who rated their current business situation as slightly lower than the previous year. Many reported declining sales and dwindling order books. The situation is being hampered by continuing weak housing construction, cautious consumer spending, and stagnant exports.
But there's a silver lining for the future! Expectations for the coming months were significantly better than the previous year. For the first time since early 2023, a recovery in the business cycle is expected, according to the association. The craft industry is anticipating an end to the housing construction slump by the end of 2025. Moreover, increased investment opportunities in infrastructure created by the federal government might drive up construction costs.
