In the city of Bergisch Gladbach, North Rhine-Westphalia, a commemorative plaque has been inaugurated, marking the recognition of three historically significant women from the Zanders entrepreneurial family. These women, Julie Zanders, Maria Zanders, and Olga Zanders, have been honoured by the Women's Council NRW e.V. for their significant contributions to the paper manufacturer Zanders.

The 'FrauenOrte NRW' project, funded by the Ministry for Children, Youth, Families, Equality, Refugees and Integration of the state of North Rhine-Westphalia, aims to honour 57 female personalities from over ten centuries and all regions of the state at 52 locations by the end of 2025. The project's inclusion of the Zanders women was proposed by Dr. Ulrich Soénius, director of the Rheinisch-Westfälisches Wirtschaftsarchiv foundation in Cologne.

Mayor Frank Stein paid tribute to the life's work of the three women, stating that their determined action secured many people's jobs and livelihoods for many years. Dr. Ina Dinter, director of the Kunstmuseum Villa Zanders, emphasized the lasting significance of Maria Zanders' work, who created Villa Zanders, a place where art, music, and civic engagement came together.

Jihane Qotit Zerhouni, board member of the Women's Council NRW e.V., explained the goal of the project as wanting to contribute to equality by correcting the skewed perception that women have not made significant contributions to history. The collection focus 'Art from Paper' and the mission to make contemporary art visible at Kunstmuseum Villa Zanders are influenced by Maria Zanders' vision.

Tatjana Gräfin von Spee, born Zanders, paid tribute to the immense and extraordinary merits of the three entrepreneurs as a direct descendant. Tatjana is the chairwoman of the Altenberger Dom-Verein founded by Maria Zanders and is also the representative of the family in the Kuratorium of the Zanders - Paper Historical Collection.

Judith Klaßen, the equal opportunities officer of the city of Bergisch Gladbach, emphasized that the three women were pioneers who decided to take responsibility for leading the company Zanders at a time when this was not common. Dr. Ulrich Soënius stated that many women have played a significant role in the history of the Rhine economy, but their role has been overlooked in the past.

Minister for Equality Josefine Paul is the patron of the 'FrauenOrte NRW' project, which seeks to bring to light the achievements of women who have shaped North Rhine-Westphalia's history. The commemorative plaque was inaugurated at a reception in Villa Zanders, a testament to the enduring impact of the Zanders women on art, industry, and the city of Bergisch Gladbach.
