Approval granted for new Bragadiru-Voluntari subway line in Bucharest
In a significant step forward for public transportation in Bucharest, the development of subway line M7 was officially initiated on June 25, 2025, following the approval of a partnership agreement by the General Council of Bucharest (CGMB). This agreement unites key stakeholders such as Bucharest’s District 5 and District 2 City Halls, the Ministry of Transport and Infrastructure, Metrorex (the subway operator), and the Ilfov County Council [1].
The M7 line, spanning approximately 13 kilometers, will link southwestern Bragadiru with northeastern Voluntari, passing through densely populated neighborhoods such as Rahova, Unirii Square, Calea Moșilor, and Colentina [1]. This major public infrastructure project aims to reduce pollution, ease road congestion, decrease accident rates, and improve public health by offering a new efficient public transport alternative [1].
District 5 City Hall will spearhead the project and will initiate the funding request under the 2021–2027 Transport Programme to conduct a feasibility study for the Bragadiru–Voluntari segment [1]. The M7 line is also part of the Bucharest–Ilfov Sustainable Urban Mobility Plan and aligns with the underground transport development strategy for 2016–2030 [1].
With this initial green light, the planning and future construction phases for the M7 subway line are set in motion. The project is expected to bring substantial benefits for urban mobility and environmental impact in Bucharest.
