Gaomi Chemical Plant Explosion: At Least Five Dead, Six Missing

A chemical plant explosion in Gaomi, a city of nearly 900,000 people in eastern China's Shandong province, has claimed at least five lives and left six people missing, according to Chinese state media reports citing authorities. Nineteen individuals have also been injured in the incident.

The blast occurred on Tuesday, May 27, 2025, at approximately 11:57 AM local time at the Shandong Youdao Chemical plant, which specializes in pesticides and pharmaceuticals.

The explosion, reportedly causing a massive thick smoke column to rise into the sky, was followed by windows shattering and objects falling as a result of the shockwave felt by residents. Videos circulating on Chinese social media corroborate these accounts.

Over 230 firefighters, accompanied by 55 emergency vehicles, were dispatched to the scene to combat the blaze and attend to the casualties. Medical professionals and occupational safety specialists were also deployed.

A team from the environment bureau was sent to monitor potential air quality and pollution concerns following the explosion. Residents reported a strange smell, prompting authorities to distribute masks to students.

The cause of the explosion remains unknown, with ongoing investigations underway to identify the reasons behind the incident.

The news comes amid increasing concerns regarding the safety standards in China's chemical industry. The recent explosion is a reminder of the 2015 Tianjin incident, which resulted in over 170 fatalities in a port city, caused by explosions at a warehouse storing flammable chemicals.
