Audi to possibly end production of RS3 and its iconic 2.5-liter inline-5 engine in 2027?

The iconic Audi RS3 is set to undergo a significant transformation in the coming years, with the impending Euro 7 emissions regulations encouraging the production of more electrified vehicles. According to reports, the RS3 may not make it past 2027 without a "heart transplant" - a change in its powertrain.

The current powerhouse of the RS3, the unique Audi I-5 engine, is renowned for its unusual five-cylinder count and its production by Audi and the Volkswagen Group. The engine's distinctive sound is considered an aural pleasure that is worth experiencing at least once in a lifetime.

However, the future of the 2.5-liter turbocharged TFSI I-5 engine beyond 2027 remains uncertain. Audi has been silent on the matter, issuing the standard statement that they cannot comment on future product plans this far out.

In a bid to meet the stricter Euro 7 emission standards beginning in 2027, Audi is updating the RS3's 5-cylinder engine with new hardware. This includes a particulate filter, enhanced NOx sensors, reworked injection mapping, and higher cell-density catalysts. Volkswagen will also employ this updated engine in the Golf R 25th Anniversary model as a final, high-performance petrol edition, boasting over 400 horsepower, along with upgrades like revised suspension, larger brakes, a wider track, and re-tuned chassis to handle the extra power and meet regulatory requirements.

The RS3 may be replaced by a track-focused RS3 GT, which is projected to produce more than 400 horsepower. The discontinuation of the RS3 is due to stricter Euro 7 emissions regulations in Europe, a trend that has already seen the Honda Civic Type R being discontinued in the region.

Volkswagen did not respond to a request for comment prior to publication. Audi, too, has remained tight-lipped about the future of their RS3 model, which is scheduled for discontinuation in 2027. The aerodynamics of the RS3 GT are expected to be improved, but details about the new model are scarce.

As the automotive industry continues to evolve, the RS3's departure marks a significant milestone. The I-5 engine, with its unique sound and character, will be sorely missed. Yet, the future of high-performance petrol vehicles, at least in Europe, seems to be taking a turn towards electrification.
