Australia Launches Cyber Wardens Initiative to Boost Small Business Cyber Resilience
The Council of Small Business Organisations of Australia, backed by Telstra, CommBank, and the Australian Cyber Security Centre, has launched the Cyber Wardens initiative. This free, accessible program aims to boost cyber resilience and literacy among non-technical small business employees.
The Cyber Wardens program, inspired by the City of London Police, seeks to create up to 60,000 Cyber Wardens in small businesses over the next three years. It is designed to be user-friendly, enabling non-tech savvy employees to enhance their cyber skills and motivation to act safely online.
With 43% of Australian cybercrime targeting small businesses, costing the economy an estimated $29 billion annually, the program is a timely investment. The federal budget has allocated $23.4 million to support this national initiative. A trained Cyber Warden could potentially save a small business $50,000 by preventing a single business-compromised email attack.
The Cyber Wardens program, led by the Council of Small Business Organisations of Australia, is set to empower small business employees to protect against digital threats. With government backing and industry support, it aims to create a cyber-smart workforce, helping small businesses thrive in the online ecosystem.
