Title: The Trade War's Shifting Tides: Beijing Calls Out "Captain Capitulate" Trump
Beijing lashes out against "Mr. Nice Guy" Trump in the customs dispute
In a surprising twist of events, the USA and China are yet again exchanging barbs in their ongoing trade war. Just a few weeks after reaching a preliminary agreement, the tone has grown more stern. The Chinese Ministry of Commerce painted the United States as the culprit, accusing them of failing to honor the trade deal.
The Ministry was frustrated by restrictions on AI technology and the mistreatment of Chinese students, as stated in a stinging statement. On the other hand, the US side alleges continuous discriminatory actions against China after the Geneva talks, specifically mentioning the restriction of AI chip sales and design software. Moreover, the Chinese students' visa cancellations have drawn Beijing's ire. The Ministry summed up its stance: Instead of self-scrutiny, the US side is recklessly finger-pointing at China without basis.
Partnership in reduction of tariffs was a significant goal for the USA under President Donald Trump. However, in recent times, Trump's tone towards China has become more belligerent: "Regrettably, China - not surprising to some - has completely disregarded our agreement," Trump shared on his online platform, Truth Social. "So much for being 'Captain Capitulate'!"
The Ministry's statement didn't specify which agreement China has allegedly breached, and it's uncertain if it involves the one discussed in May 2021. While the US administration frowned upon the ongoing tariff reductions in China, other trade barriers like restrictions on rare earth exports still stand.
Trump hinted at a potential resolution through a direct conversation with the Chinese President Xi Jinping: "Here's hoping we'll find a solution," Trump said at a recent press conference in the Oval Office, but a confirmation of talks from Beijing was yet to be announced.
