Belfast City Airport Unveils Master Plan 2040

Belfast City Airport has announced its draft Master Plan 2040, a strategic vision to meet future demand and reinforce its position as a vital economic enabler for the region. The plan, which prioritises sustainability, greener journeys, and improved infrastructure, is now open for public consultation.

The Master Plan, a commitment by Belfast City Airport, aims to accommodate 7 million passengers annually by 2040. To achieve this, the airport proposes increasing its annual cap on aircraft movements from 48,000 to 61,000, with no runway extension required.

Sustainability measures, including progress towards net zero, form part of the Master Plan's strategy. The plan emphasises a focus on greener journeys, with improvements to surface access and the development of electric vehicle charging points. New developments such as a hotel and more charging points are proposed in the draft plan.

Encouraging more passengers to use public transport is a priority, with a feasibility study underway with Translink into the proposed rail link. The draft plan suggests the possibility of a rail halt on the Bangor line, making Belfast City Airport the first on the island of Ireland with a direct rail link.

The airport estimates that this investment could support over 23,000 jobs regionally. The draft plan could potentially double the airport's direct workforce to around 2,200. The Master Plan's delivery will contribute to key elements of the Northern Ireland Executive's Programme for Government.

The draft plan also includes the expansion of terminal and airfield facilities, the development of the airport's apprenticeship academy, and community engagement initiatives. Feedback is being invited by post or at public engagement sessions, with the consultation running until 11 November 2025.

The Executive Office has presented the planning for the Masterplan 2040 for Belfast City Airport and has launched a public consultation on the draft. The draft plan could contribute around 1.7 billion GBP in annual gross value added (GVA) to the Northern Ireland economy. Potential private investment of up to 200 million GBP is proposed in the draft plan.

The Master Plan is a once-in-a-generation opportunity that will benefit passengers and businesses across the region. The draft Master Plan can be viewed and responses submitted at belfastcityairport.com/vision. Don't miss your chance to have your say on the future of Belfast City Airport.
