Booming Hamburg Trade Show Yields High Revenue - Potential Conflict Arises at This Conference

Got Some Exciting News from the Mese Hamburg

The Messe Hamburg, one of Germany's renowned exhibition and convention centers, just had a monumental year! For the first time since 2008, the company has recorded a whopping 140.2 million euros in annual revenue, marking a significant surge of over 25% compared to the previous record year in 2016. Uwe Fischer, Messe CEO, couldn't contain his excitement as he announced these figures during the presentation of their annual report.

Ah, you might wonder, what's the big deal about these numbers? Well, besides the spectacular income, the company managed to secure an unprecedented annual profit of 20.9 million euros. And guess what? This impressive feat hasn't occurred since the grand opening of the new exhibition grounds back in 2008!

With more than 900,000 guests gracing the grounds and the Congress Center (CCH) throughout 123 events, it's safe to say that Messe Hamburg has been sparking some serious excitement.

Slashing costs, pocketing profits

So, what's the secret sauce behind Messe Hamburg's newfound success? Believe it or not, it all started with a simple rent adjustment. Instead of shelling out a whopping 22 million euros per year for the exhibition halls, the company now pays a standard commercial rent of approximately seven million euros.

"Before, we were paying around 30 euros cold per square meter per month for a bare exhibition hall, and now we're at around 9 euros," Fischer emphasized, grinning from ear to ear. Strategic decisions made during the corona period have also played a significant role in the company's prosperity.

But wait, there's more!

Despite the positive surge in 2021, Messe Hamburg doesn't expect to close this year with a positive overall result. The aim is to achieve a positive outcome for the biennial years 2024 and 2025. And what's on the cards for this year, you ask? More than 100 events are already planned for the CCH, with medical and scientific conferences taking center stage.

But there's one event that's got the tongues wagging - the Global Security & Innovation Summit (GSIS), slated for October 22 and 23. With up to 750 guests, including 170 to 180 specially invited experts, this conference tackles foreign and security policy issues, much like the Munich Security Conference.

The International Institute for Strategic Studies (IISS), a London-based think tank with a presence in Berlin, serves as the summit's strategic partner. A small exhibition of drones will also be a part of the event, with Fischer quick to stress that it's "definitely not a military exhibition" and the focus is squarely on dialogue about security.

However, let's be real, not everyone is going to be delighted about this summit. We all know what happened during the 2017 G20 summit in Hamburg, right? So, expect a round of critical discussions in society, but hey, that's what democracy's all about!
