Funeral Costs on the Rise Across Kazakhstan: Here's What's Behind the Surge

Listen up, folks! You won't believe the latest figure on funeral and ritual services cost in Kazakhstan: a whopping 4.9% increase nationwide over the past year. But it's not just the average— folks in the West Kazakhstan region have been hit hard, with prices soaring a staggering 50%! Let's dive deeper into why these numbers are skyrocketing.

According to Finprom, around 132,900 individuals passed away in Kazakhstan last year— a 1.7% uptick compared to the year before. Despite the increase in deaths, the total volume of services in monetary terms saw a 38.2% plunge, reaching 4.9 billion tenge.

Funeral costs have been on an upward trend for an astounding 51 months, or more than four years, despite the overall drop in services. By March's end, funeral expenses climbed 4.9% year-over-year across the country. To put things into perspective, the increase was 13% in 2023 and a mind-blowing 24.6% in 2022.

The West Kazakhstan region has been hit hardest by these surging costs, followed closely by the Jetisu and Aktobe regions, which experienced increases of 23.1% and 11.1%, respectively. In fact, prices have gone up in 11 regions of the country, while remaining roughly the same in the others as compared to last year.

So, what's driving these escalating costs? While we don't have definitive answers, here are somepossibilities that could be playing a role:

  • Economic Conditions: Economic woes like inflation and shifts in supply and demand for funeral services can dramatically inflate costs. Kazakhstan's economy has faced challenges, including fuel price spikes that sparked demonstrations in early 2023[1]. It's possible that these economic factors could filter down to the funeral industry as well.
  • Supply and Demand: A limited supply of funeral services and facilities could result in higher costs due to reduced competition in certain regions.
  • International Influences: Kazakhstan's economy is also affected by its involvement in OPEC+ and the global oil market[2]. Although this mainly impacts energy prices, it could indirectly influence broader service costs.
  • Regional Differences: Regional discrepancies in costs might be due to variations in resources, transportation costs, and local regulations. In West Kazakhstan, particular local circumstances such as challenging transportation conditions or restricted access to facilities might contribute to swelling funeral expenses.
