Catastrophic blast at Nebraska factory causes disappearance of three individuals
In Fremont, Nebraska, an explosion at a Horizon Biofuels manufacturing building has left three individuals missing and claimed the lives of an employee and his two young daughters. The incident occurred midday on July 29, 2025, at the plant, which produces fuel pellets and animal bedding.
The cause of the explosion remains a mystery and is currently under investigation by the Nebraska State Fire Marshal's Office and other agencies. Authorities have not yet released any definitive findings about what may have triggered the blast.
The building, a warehouse-style structure made of steel and corrugated metal, partially collapsed due to the explosion, making it difficult for rescue teams to access the site. A federally organized search-and-rescue task force based in Lincoln has pledged to tunnel through the debris if necessary.
Governor Jim Pillen is closely monitoring the situation and is ready to offer assistance. The Nebraska State Patrol has also responded to the explosion.
Tragically, the blast has left three individuals unaccounted for. It is unclear if they are employees of Horizon Biofuels, Inc., which also produces pet bedding under the name Elkhorn Valley Animal Bedding.
Air quality in the area is not considered a danger, but residents downwind are advised to avoid breathing in smoky air. Drinking water in the vicinity remains unaffected.
As investigations continue, the community has been asked to avoid the area due to the ongoing explosion risks. Smoke continues to rise over the community, and it is expected to smolder for several days.
Representatives for Horizon Biofuels did not immediately respond to a request for comment, and the Nebraska Department of Water, Energy, and Environment also declined to comment.
