Catastrophic Plain Impact Event Ruled Out as Possible Inspiration for the Biblical Account of Sodom and Gomorrah

Ancient City Destruction Claim With Biblical Implications Withdrawn From Prestigious Journal

A scientific paper published in the prestigious journal Scientific Reports, which attributed the destruction of the ancient Middle Bronze Age city of Tall el-Hammam to a cosmic airburst similar to the Tunguska event, has been retracted following widespread criticism and concerns about its accuracy.

The paper, released in 2021, argued that the airburst, coupled with its timing and characteristics, suggested the event could potentially have inspired the biblical narrative of Sodom and Gomorrah, as it was perceived by Bronze Age people as an inexplicable and divine punishment. The authors presented various pieces of evidence, including shocked quartz grains, certain Platinum Group Elements, and high salinity levels apparent at the site.

However, several experts have raised questions about the scientific integrity of the paper, with physicist Mark Boslough, an airburst specialist, stating that the researchers misrepresented his data in the paper, contradicting their conclusions. Moreover, Elisabeth Bik, an expert in scientific integrity, found suspicious repetitions in images included in the study, suggesting possible tampering. The authors dismissed these concerns as trivial, but others remained unsatisfied.

Critics also argued against the evidence presented, highlighting incomplete PGE data and questioning the explanation for the site's salinity. Reviews in 2022 concluded that the proper criteria for demonstrating an airburst were not met.

In response to the mounting criticism, an editor's note was issued by Scientific Reports in 2023, indicating that the paper was undergoing further investigations concerning its data and conclusions. Almost two years later, on April 24, 2025, the journal formally retracted the paper, citing errors in methodology, data analysis, and interpretation of results.

This retraction has sparked broader discussions about the challenges in attributing ancient destruction events to cosmic impacts and the potential risks of pseudoscience within the field. The controversy surrounding the Tall el-Hammam airburst hypothesis has now been discredited within the scientific community, leaving the connection to biblical stories speculative and unsupported by reliable scientific data.

  1. The retracted paper, initially published in Scientific Reports, prompted discussions about the difficulties in attributing ancient destructions to cosmic impacts, particularly within the realm of environmental science and general news.
  2. In the realm of education and self-development, this incident serves as a cautionary tale about the importance of scientific integrity and the consequences of misrepresenting data in science and business.
  3. The space industry, which continues to grow and advance, relies heavily on the credibility of scientific research, as the implications of inaccurate findings could potentially affect climate-change predictions and future space missions.
  4. The controversy surrounding the Tall el-Hammam airburst hypothesis has specific implications for the field of archaeology, as well as for environmental-science and scientific-research journals, emphasizing the need for thorough review processes and checking of data in the face of groundbreaking claims.
  5. Amidst the ongoing debates and retractions in scientific publications, it is crucial for the finance and business sectors to exercise caution when making decisions based on research findings, as the credibility of such findings can significantly impact investments and strategic planning in various industries.
