Changes in Germany: Ticketing, Taxes, Child Benefit for Individuals in 2025

In the new year, expect changes across the board—from your paycheck to your family support, cost of living, health, mobility, accessibility, and EU requirements. While the political situation is causing a bit of a delay in the budget being passed, fret not! Key state benefits like the citizen's allowance are secure under the provisional budget management. Let's dive into the specifics!

Boosted Incomes and Reliefs

  • Minimum Wage: Get ready to earn at least 12.82 euros gross per hour, starting from January 2025.
  • Mini Jobs: The income limit for these jobs is jumping up to 556 euros per month.
  • Basic Allowance: That's right! This allowance is increasing retroactively to January 1, 2024, to 11,784 euros, and bumping up to 12,084 euros in 2025. You'll enjoy tax-free income up to this amount.
  • Housing Allowance:An average increase of 15 percent, or around 30 euros more per month, is on the horizon for housing allowance, with an average monthly payout of roughly 400 euros.

Family Support

  • Child Benefit: From 2025, families will receive 255 euros per child per month, which is 5 euros more than before!
  • Child Allowance: This will be bumped up by 60 euros to 9,600 euros per child.
  • Parental Allowance: Be mindful that the income limit for parental allowance will decrease to 175,000 euros starting April 1, 2025. This means those with a higher income will no longer be eligible.

Care Services and Pension Insurance

  • Care Insurance: Get ready for an increase of 0.2 percentage points in contributions. Alongside this, care services will go up by 4.5 percent. Additionally, a flexible amount for substitute and short-term care will be introduced.
  • Pension Insurance: Starting in 2025, the contribution assessment limits will be raised nationwide for the first time to 8,050 euros.

Health and Sustainability

  • Electronic Patient Record: Look forward to electronic patient records being rolled out gradually from 2025, digitizing your patient data for improved access to healthcare services.
  • Textiles: From January, textiles such as clothing, towels, and bed linen must be disposed of separately in collection containers.
  • Amalgam Ban: dental fillings made of amalgam will be banned throughout the EU in the near future.
  • Health Insurance: Buckle up, as the additional contribution of statutory health insurance will be increasing from 1.7 percent to 2.5 percent starting the new year. Health insurance companies have the freedom to decide whether to increase it themselves, but if they do, you have the special right to terminate at the end of the month.

Costs and Mobility

  • CO2 Price: Watch out for an increase in the price for emissions, which will bump up heating and fuel costs.
  • Germany Ticket: Despite the price hike to 58 euros per month, rest assured the ticket will continue to be valid nationwide.
  • Driving License Exchange: Keep an eye out, as many driving licenses will have to be exchanged by January 19, 2025.
  • Motor Vehicle Insurance: Don't be surprised if premiums increase by up to 20 percent, given the rising repair costs due to inflation.

Barrier-Free Accessibility and Real Estate Tax

  • Barrier-Free Accessibility: Products and services such as ATMs and websites must be barrier-free starting from June, to make life easier for everyone.
  • Real Estate Tax: The reform brings new calculation models based on the development of the neighborhood.

EU Requirements

  • Uniform Charging Cable: USB-C will be the standard for electronic devices from 2025.
  • SD Switch-Off: ARD will no longer broadcast its programs in SD quality.
