However, the backlog in obtaining transmission valve bodies has caused significant delays in repairing the affected vehicles, with some owners reporting their vehicles sitting at dealerships for weeks or even months without clear estimates on resolution times [2].
In response to the parts shortage, some dealerships and GM have authorized full transmission replacements as a workaround to bypass the valve body backorder, including cases where owners waited more than seven months without resolution [1].
The issue has been a point of controversy since early 2024, with independent engineers claiming that a permanent mechanical fix exists for the defect but alleging that GM has not adopted it. Instead, GM has provided software updates that only mask symptoms rather than fixing the root cause [5].
The transmission problem impacts ICE-powered vehicles produced for the 2019 model year onward, including the Chevy Silverado 1500, Chevy Tahoe, GMC Sierra 1500, GMC Yukon, GMC Yukon XL, Cadillac Escalade, and Cadillac Escalade ESV [6]. The Chevy Tahoe is another GM vehicle affected by the ongoing transmission issue.
GM has extended repair coverage for affected vehicles, offering up to 15 years or 150,000 miles due to this defect [1][2]. The company acknowledges supply chain bottlenecks and is working to rectify the situation, but no firm timelines have been provided to affected customers [2].
