Professor Christopher Bones has been appointed as the new Chair of the Board of Trustees for the Chartered Institute of Personnel and Development (CIPD), effective immediately. He succeeds Valerie Hughes D'Aeth, who has held the role since 2021.
In his new position, Professor Bones will oversee the strategic direction of the CIPD, with a particular focus on shaping the future of work by addressing the challenges and opportunities brought by Artificial Intelligence (AI).
Professor Bones, who co-founded and led a digital company analyzing consumer insights, has previous experience in senior HR positions at Diageo and Cadbury. He was also Dean of Henley Business School from 2004 to an undisclosed date. In 2002, he became a Chartered Fellow of the CIPD.
His strategy for the CIPD centers on building the confidence and capabilities of HR professionals to work closely with business strategy while supporting workforce needs. He emphasizes the importance of helping organizations adapt to AI by understanding its impact on skills and roles and ensuring the technology is used responsibly and ethically.
Under Valerie Hughes D'Aeth's leadership, the CIPD's membership grew to over 160,000 members internationally. Her tenure also saw the CIPD navigate the period of Covid and strategic investment in digital and organizational transformation.
