Dresden's Homemade Zebra Crossing Closure Sparks Controversy

A homemade zebra crossing near several schools and kindergartens in Dresden has been closed by the city administration, causing concern among parents, residents, and students of the Heinrich-Schütz Conservatory. The closure has left thousands of children scrambling for a safe way to cross the street.

For five years, Kraft, the chairman of the Dresden Parents' Council, has been advocating for school safety. He claims that the existing traffic island is insufficient for providing a clear signal for drivers to stop for pedestrians or cyclists. The music students of the Heinrich-Schütz Conservatory, who frequently use the closed zebra crossing, have been demanding a proper crossing option for many years.

Miriam Lehmann from the parents' association of the Schütz Conservatory finds the current situation intolerable. She believes that the closure of the zebra crossing leaves no safe crossing option, especially considering the increased traffic in the area due to the collapse of the Carol Bridge. Stefan Kraft, chairman of the Dresden Parents' Council, called the closure a farce.

Initially, Lehmann suggested a traffic light as the best solution for the crossing, but no response has been received from the city yet. Residents and other affected parties now hope for either a legal zebra crossing or a traffic light to be installed.

Legally, the unauthorized application of a zebra crossing can be considered a criminal offense, potentially dangerous interference in traffic, and usurpation of authority. However, the city administration recognizes the need for safer and official alternatives. They are considering implementing properly designed and legal pedestrian crossings that comply with traffic regulations. These may include official zebra crossings marked and controlled by traffic signals or crossing guards to ensure safe passage for children near schools and kindergartens.

The city encourages the use of certified crossing infrastructure combined with awareness measures such as vigilant driving in school zones, presence of crossing guards, and reduced speeds to enhance pedestrian safety around these areas. The administration urges patience and understanding as they work towards finding a long-term solution for the safety of the city's children.
