City of Solingen calls for a new beginning, as suggested by FDP

=======================================================================================

In the city of Solingen, known for its steel and cutlery industries, economic challenges have been mounting over the past few years. These challenges, common among traditional manufacturing cities in Europe, include industry decline, global competition, and lack of diversification.

The FDP faction in Solingen's city council has put forth an action plan to address these issues, with a focus on industrial site development, modernization, and marketing. The plan also includes active marketing of Solingen's economic location, simplifying and accelerating permit procedures, and returning economic development to core tasks such as advising companies, settlement policy, and selling municipal properties to private hands.

However, Solingen's budget plan for 2025/2026 does not offer new prospects or strategies for economic improvement. Instead, it includes significant expenses that will incur debts, with the city providing approximately 14 million euros for interest on liquidity loans in the next year. By 2030, this interest is expected to rise to 21.6 million euros per year.

The FDP's proposed plan has been met with criticism from Nina Brattig, chairwoman of the FDP faction in the Solingen city council, who labels it as "hopeless politics" with a lack of vision for the city's future.

Looking to other cities that have faced similar challenges, Duisburg is a city in North Rhine-Westphalia that managed to overcome economic difficulties through industrial site management, location marketing, internationalization, innovation, and technology transfer. These investments led to increases in trade tax revenues, helping Duisburg to overcome debt and achieve economic recovery.

Duisburg's success can be attributed to its diversification and innovation, leveraging its strategic location and expanding logistics infrastructure, and implementing urban renewal projects and focusing on sustainability. These strategies have attracted new businesses and residents, improving the quality of life and making the city more competitive.

While specific information about Solingen's economic struggles and Duisburg's solutions is not provided, understanding the general economic challenges faced by industrial cities in Europe and the typical strategies for addressing them can offer insights into how cities like Solingen might approach similar issues.

It is clear that Solingen's economic recovery will require a concerted effort to diversify its industries, invest in innovation, and improve its infrastructure and urban environment. The city's leadership must take a proactive approach to attract new businesses, create jobs, and stimulate growth, learning from the successes of cities like Duisburg.
