Collaborative venture for a sustainable energy landscape
Rostock Port and Pecém Sign Declaration of Intent for Strategic Partnership
In a significant move, the largest universal port on the German Baltic coast, Rostock Port, and the industrial and port complex of Pecém in the state of Ceará, Brazil, have agreed to develop a transport corridor for the exchange of green energy and green products.
The declaration of intent, signed by Rostock Port's Managing Director, Dr. Gernot Tesch, and the development agency of Pecém (CIPP), marks a strategic partnership aimed at closer cooperation in the areas of hydrogen, logistics, and investments.
During his visit to Pecém in October 2024, State Secretary for Economic Affairs, Jochen Schulte (SPD), emphasised that Pecém is developing into the central hydrogen hub of Brazil. He also stated that Rostock is one of the German future ports for green energies.
Pecém, known for its strategic location and infrastructure, has the potential to become a logistics and industrial hub in northeastern Brazil. With numerous projects already underway for the production of green hydrogen and ammonia, the industrial and port complex of Pecém is considered a key location for the future production of green hydrogen in Brazil.
Tesch views this cooperation as an opportunity for Rostock to further expand its role as an important energy port. He also mentioned that Rostock Port will actively use this opportunity to promote investments in Pecém.
Schulte, who led an economic delegation during the trip to Brazil, suggested that together, Rostock and Pecém can ensure that the energy transition is thought of internationally. The Memorandum of Understanding is intended for closer cooperation between Rostock Port and Pecém, with the transport corridor facilitating the transportation of green energy and green products from Brazil to Germany and Eastern Europe.
The agreement is initially valid for two years, and the close cooperation between the Port of Rostock and Pecém in Brazil since October 2024 is managed by Rostock Port. This collaboration was formalized through a letter of intent signed by the involved parties.
Schulte's visit to Pecém was part of a trip to Brazil by Federal Council President Manuela Schwesig (SPD). Dr. Gernot Tesch also visited Pecém during the same trip, further strengthening the ties between the two ports.
With this strategic partnership, both Rostock Port and Pecém aim to contribute significantly to the global energy transition and the development of green hydrogen technologies.
