Completed transformation: refugee facility in Neukölln now operational
Refugee Accommodation at Sonnenallee in Neukölln Set to Open on September 1
BERLIN − The renovation work on the refugee community accommodation at Sonnenallee in Neukölln has been completed, the State Office for Refugee Affairs (LAF) confirmed to dpa. The facility is scheduled to become operational from September 1, following repairs to the heating system and the installation of furniture in the rooms.
The building, previously a senior care home, has already been transferred to the LAF. The newly refurbished accommodation can house 290 refugees. The structure features 101 rooms of varying sizes, accommodating two or three individuals each, some of which come with attached bathrooms.
In addition to individual rooms, the building includes communal spaces, kitchens, bathrooms, offices, and counseling rooms for the service provider on the first floor. Ahead of its initial use from early September, an open house day is planned for the neighborhood, allowing residents to tour the facility. The date for this event is currently under coordination with the district.
Neukölln's Sonnenallee has previously been associated with various events and activities, including a fundraiser for medical care and housing support.
