Constructing a fresh foot and bike bridge linking Goldgrube and Rauental
In the heart of Rhineland-Palatinate, a new pedestrian and cycling bridge is set to transform the cityscape of Koblenz. This bridge, planned between Rauental and Goldgrube, is more than just an engineering feat; it's a significant step towards a more sustainable, connected, and healthier Koblenz.
Funded by the Ministry of Transport of Rhineland-Palatinate to the tune of approximately 2.3 million euros, this bridge project is interconnected with the future train station at the Administration Center.
The bridge will serve as a vital non-motorized transport corridor, linking the Rauental and Goldgrube districts more efficiently. This direct and safe route will promote non-motorized traffic across the Rhine, aiming to reduce reliance on cars. One of the key goals is to encourage a modal shift from car usage to more sustainable travel options like trains, walking, and cycling. The project aims to support up to 3,000 travelers switching daily from car to train by providing enhanced access to the Rheinuferbahn (Rhine shore railway line).
By reducing car usage, the project hopes to lower emissions and improve air quality in the region. It also facilitates recreational activities, providing a scenic, accessible route for cyclists and pedestrians, promoting healthier lifestyles.
Urban development and quality of life are expected to benefit from this enhanced mobility. With improved access to the Administration Center, clinics, and the Moselle baths, the new bridge could potentially increase property values and encourage local economic activity.
State Secretary for Transport Andy Becht stated that the new bridge sends an important signal for a balanced mix of traffic in Koblenz. The Federal Government is also supporting the cycling component of the construction costs and accompanying measures, contributing around 3.2 million euros from the "Climate Protection through Cycling" funding program.
The new pedestrian and cycling bridge will serve as a crucial link in the Rheinuferbahn’s broader strategy to enhance sustainable transport in Koblenz, making train travel more attractive and convenient by improving first- and last-mile access.
The future train station at the Administration Center is expected to have significant passenger traffic, making it among the relatively large train stations in Rhineland-Palatinate. The bridge construction project is a part of the state government's focus on strengthening cycling and pedestrian traffic, particularly in future-proof inner cities.

Minister of Transport Katrin Eder stated that the new bridge creates the prerequisite for the later construction of a train station, which could encourage around 3,300 people per day to leave their cars behind. The Federal Ministry of Transport and Digital Infrastructure is funding the district connection function with around 1.4 million euros.
The new pedestrian and cycling bridge, along with the future train station at the Administration Center, is intended to improve accessibility and connectivity within Koblenz. Estimated to cost around 20 million euros, this project is set to be a game-changer for sustainable transport in the city.
- In addition to its role in enhancing Koblenz's cityscape, the new pedestrian and cycling bridge also aligns with environmental-science initiatives, aiming to reduce carbon emissions and promote sustainable travel options like public-transit, walking, and cycling.
- The Ministry of Environmental-Science in Rhineland-Palatinate could potentially fund the climate change-related aspects of this project, considering its goals of reducing reliance on cars and improving air quality.
- The bridge's impact on Koblenz extends beyond transportation, as it could incentivize the finance industry to invest in similar projects that prioritize environmental-science and sustainable transportation.
- The growth of environmental-science in Koblenz could attract more industries that prioritize climate-change solutions, further boosting the local economy and fostering a more sustainable cityscape.
