Construction finished at Europe Square, disputes over water issuance resurface

The iconic fountain at Europaplace, a landmark in the heart of the city, has been brought back to life after a meticulous renovation. The fountain, built in 1958 and covering an area of around 8,000 square meters with a diameter of 100 meters, was last operational on July 30, 2025, following a hiatus that began in October 2023.

The renovation process included the replacement of the fountain's 26 water jets and the installation of 35 highly efficient LED spotlights, enhancing its impressive water display. The fountain's basin was also drained and sealed in summer 2024 in preparation for the 2025 season, and the technical and electrical equipment were renewed.

The renovation of Europaplace square, where the fountain is located, also included the expansion of the lighting, the installation of benches and trash cans, and the separation of the foot and cycle path around a new green area on a section. Ancillary facilities and overpasses on the Joseph-von-Goërres-Straße and in and out of the direction of Blücherplatz were also renovated.

The renovation of the fountain and the surrounding area was made possible by funding from the Social City Aachen-Nord project, with up to 80% of the costs covered by the state of NRW. The motorway company has also announced that the A544 motorway, which had been closed for construction work, will be reopened on September 8, with only the on and off-ramps remaining closed.

The decision to seal the fountain basin was influenced by the significant decrease in traffic on Europaplace due to the A544 motorway closure, allowing for the necessary renovation work to be carried out. The fountain would have required around 3,500 cubic meters of fresh water, but provided the weather permits, it is to remain switched on until late autumn this year.

New trees will be planted in the new green area in spring 2026, completing the transformation of Europaplace square. Traffic on the square is flowing again in almost all directions, and the fountain's return to life is a welcome addition to the city's vibrant landscape.

The renovation project in Europaplace square, where the iconic fountain stands, also touched upon the transportation sector with the renovation of ancillary facilities and overpasses on the Joseph-von-Goërres-Straße. The renewal of the fountain, along with advancements in its LED spotlights and water jets, represents a significant step in the industry and finance sectors, showcasing mutually beneficial collaborations in enhancing the city's landmarks.
