Container Ship Collision in Baltimore Disrupts Port Operations, Closure Feared Until May
A container ship, the Dali, collided with a bridge column in Baltimore early on 28 March, causing significant disruption to the port's operations. The incident has led to vessels diverting to nearby ports and raised concerns about the channel's closure until May.
The collision, which occurred around 1am (EST), involved the 290-metre Dali, managed by Synergy Marine Group and chartered by Maersk. The ship was carrying approximately 4,700 containers. All 22 crew members on board were accounted for with no injuries. However, the incident resulted in eight people falling into the water, with two rescued and two bodies recovered. Sadly, four people remain missing.
Baltimore, the busiest US vehicle-handling port, moved 847,158 vehicles in 2023. The collision has led Mercedes-Benz to consider diverting vessels to the Brunswick port. Maersk has also released an advisory notice omitting Baltimore from all services for the foreseeable future. This incident may cause a shift in finished vehicle logistics to other US west coast ports if the port remains closed indefinitely.
The collision may result in the channel remaining closed until May, causing further disruption to the port's operations. The incident has highlighted the importance of Baltimore as a major vehicle-handling port and the potential impact of closures on logistics and supply chains. The search for the remaining four missing individuals continues.
