Controversial Schildgen Street Redesign Approved Despite Criticism
The redesign of Altenberger-Dom-Straße in Schildgen has sparked controversy. While the city approved the plans, local traffic associations ADFC Rheinberg-Oberberg e.V. and Pro Velo Bergisch Gladbach have criticized the changes. The identity of the complainant remains unknown.
The proposed alterations adapt the infrastructure to modern safety standards, rather than being a significant redesign. They aim to improve bike and pedestrian paths, traffic management, and parking spaces. Notably, the project does not increase motor vehicle traffic capacity, as required by § 38 StrWG NRW.
Despite not being mandatory, citizen participation was offered. The local authority, Rheinisch-Bergischer Kreis, has since ruled that the city acted legally in approving the redesign without a plan approval procedure.
The redesign of Altenberger-Dom-Straße in Schildgen is set to improve cycling and pedestrian infrastructure, with no increase in motor vehicle capacity. Despite local associations' criticism, the city's approval was deemed legal. The identity of the complainant remains unclear.
