Conversation: Charlie Miller Discusses His Thoughts and Experiences in a Q&A Session
Charlie Miller, one of the world's most renowned hackers, has made significant contributions to the field of information security. With a PhD in mathematics, Miller's career spans from working at the NSA to high-tech companies like Twitter and Uber, and now as the Distinguished Engineer, Lead of Autonomous Transportation Security at Didi Chuxing.
Miller first gained fame by being the first to hack both the iPhone and the first Android phone. His exploits extended beyond mobile devices, as he also attempted to hack laptop batteries and a Palm Pre, although he was unsuccessful in causing them to catch fire or hack the Palm Pre, respectively.
One of Miller's most notable accomplishments is his work in the realm of autonomous vehicle safety. He wrote an exploit that could control a driving automobile and, in 2015, presented a hack on a Jeep Cherokee, leading to a recall of 1.4 million Fiat Chrysler vehicles. Due to changes made as a result of this hack, the recalled vehicles are now safer.
Miller's current focus is on making autonomous vehicles resistant to cyber-attacks. To achieve this, he has expressed a desire to form a project team with Chris Valasek, Mark Dowd, and Joe Grand, if given the opportunity.
In addition to his technical achievements, Miller is also passionate about diversity in the information security sector. One of his goals is to increase the representation of women and minorities.
Despite his impressive qualifications, Miller faced rejection early in his career. After graduating from university, NASA ignored his job applications. However, this setback did not deter Miller, who continues to be recognised as one of the best hackers in the world and a leader in the field of cybersecurity.
Miller admires the work of Barnaby Jack, a researcher known for his hacks on ATM machines and medical devices. Despite multiple projects that were not successful, Miller has not specified a particular time when a hack went wrong. He regrets not spending more time learning about topics that he did not necessarily need to know right away.
Before joining Didi Chuxing, Miller worked at Uber. His work in the field of cybersecurity is crucial in ensuring the safety of the rapidly growing autonomous vehicle industry.
