Stuttgart's SPD Leader Criticises Child Bonus for Civil Servants

In a public statement made in Stuttgart, Andreas Stoch, the SPD parliamentary group leader in Baden-Württemberg, has expressed his criticism towards the monthly supplement of approximately 1,000 euros for each child from the third onwards given to civil servants in the region.

Stoch, a member of the Social Democratic Party (SPD), emphasized that he finds this bonus hard to justify, particularly in light of the potential social imbalance it might create. He believes that good, adequate remuneration for the people who work for the state is right, but this bonus, he contends, may lead to an unfair distribution of resources.

The SPD leader's stance on the matter is not unique. Both the "Stuttgarter Zeitung" and "Stuttgarter Nachrichten" have reported similar criticisms, and the civil service union has also voiced its concerns. Kai Rosenberger, the state chairman of the union, refers to this bonus as a "financial advantage for civil service children that is difficult to explain in terms of social policy."

Stoch, however, also acknowledged the importance of families and the role children play in society. He considers the previous increases in child benefit to be sensible and believes that people who have children are doing what is important and right for society.

This criticism of the child bonus is not new. In 2020, the Federal Constitutional Court declared the remuneration of child-rich judges and public prosecutors from North Rhine-Westphalia to be too low and partly unconstitutional.

Despite his criticism, Stoch clarified that the SPD faction had not yet made a final decision on this topic. The debate continues, with many questioning the fairness and social implications of this financial bonus for civil servants with multiple children.
