Customs Inspections Find 96 Cases of Irregularities in Hotel and Catering Industry
The Financial Control of Illegal Work of the Customs (FKS) conducted inspections in the hotel and catering industry on Friday, September 19, 2025. The nationwide focus inspection, led by the Main Customs Office Bielefeld, discovered irregularities in 96 cases, including minimum wage violations and illegal employment.
The inspection involved 63 customs officers from Bielefeld, Hamm, Herford, and Paderborn. They questioned 250 employees about their employment conditions and compared employee data with wage and financial records. The team also examined further business documents.
The investigation revealed 79 cases of minimum wage violations, seven cases of suspected social security contribution evasion, and three cases of illegal employment of foreigners. The current general minimum wage is 12.82 euros per hour. Arnd Hilwig, head of the Hauptzollamt Bielefeld, will oversee the further processing of these results.
Twelve administrative offense proceedings and four criminal proceedings were initiated on site. The FKS focuses on the hotel and catering industry due to its size and employment intensity, which falls under the Minimum Wage Act (MiLoG). The inspections aim to ensure compliance with legal minimum wage and social security obligations, and to uncover improper receipt of social benefits and illegal employment.
