Debut of Leapmotor B05, a competitor to the VW Golf, at the Munich Auto Show
The Chinese electric vehicle manufacturer, Leapmotor, is set to expand its European lineup with the introduction of the B05, a compact hatchback that will rival the Volkswagen Golf. The B05 is a smaller sibling to the B01 saloon, which was unveiled earlier this year.
Next month, Leapmotor will unveil the B05 at the Munich motor show, and it is expected to enter the European market in a mid-range price category. Reports suggest that prices will range between €25,000 and around €32,000, potentially undercutting main rivals while offering premium-feeling features.
Leapmotor's European lineup currently includes the T03 city car and C10 mid-size SUV. The B05 will join this roster, along with two other new models: another hatchback and a small SUV.
The B05 is likely to share its main design cues with its siblings, featuring wraparound light bars, sporting-inspired wheel designs, and an aerodynamically optimised silhouette. It will also boast a 14.6in infotainment touchscreen and a focus on high-quality materials.
Intriguingly, the B05 and C10 will share the same Leap 3.5 platform and are expected to offer the same claimed 650km (404-mile) range. This could position the B05 as a formidable competitor in the electric hatchback segment, which is currently dominated by the Volkswagen ID 3, Cupra Born, and MG 4 EV.
Leapmotor aims to have a six-car line-up in the UK by 2027. In addition to the B05, the company will also introduce an entry-level crossover, dubbed the A10, which will sit beneath the B10 and be a rival to the Renault 4 and Jeep Avenger. The A10 will spawn its own low-riding hatchback sibling, called the A05. This budget-friendly model could be priced below £20,000 and will compete against the Fiat Grande Panda, Citroën ë-C3, and Skoda Epiq.
While details about the powertrain options for Leapmotor's European models are yet to be confirmed, it remains unclear if any of them will offer the range-extender powertrain.
The B05's entry into the European market is an exciting development for Leapmotor, as it will give the company a strong presence in the electric hatchback segment. Stay tuned for more updates as we approach the B05's unveiling at the Munich motor show next month.
