Del Ray neighborhood eatery, Tortas Y Tacos La Chiquita, adjusts operation times due to nearby residents' complaints

In the vibrant Del Ray neighbourhood of Alexandria, a new Mexican restaurant is set to open next week at 529 E. Howell Ave., the former location of Bark Social. The establishment, Tortas Y Tacos La Chiquita, will operate from 8 a.m. to 2 a.m., following a series of discussions between the restaurant owners and city staff to address community concerns.

Initially, the restaurant had applied for a special use permit to operate 24 hours a day. However, following concerns raised by nearby residents about potential crime, noise, and traffic impacts, the restaurant agreed to adjust its hours.

David Villalobos, the owner of Tortas Y Tacos La Chiquita, expressed his intention to eventually expand to 24-hour service. In the meantime, he plans to hire security, similar to the chain's location on Columbia Pike, to ensure a safe and peaceful environment for the community.

The restaurant's modified hours of operation, from 8 a.m. to 2 a.m., were encouraged by the city to expedite the approval process after more than three months of review. City staff worked diligently to address these concerns, aiming to maintain a balance between supporting local businesses and addressing the needs of the community.

Katie Wannen, a Del Ray resident, expressed her desire for proper oversight due to past noise issues with previous tenants. Her concerns, along with those of other neighbours, were taken seriously by city staff, who worked closely with the restaurant owners to find a solution that would minimise disruption.

Tony LaColla, Planning and Zoning's Land Use Services division chief, mentioned concerns from nearby residents about the restaurant being open 24 hours to the Alexandria Times. However, the restaurant's commitment to addressing these concerns and its agreement to close daily at 2 a.m. instead of operating 24/7, have eased some of these concerns.

Tortas Y Tacos La Chiquita will not serve alcohol, further addressing concerns about potential noise and crime. The restaurant's new hours and commitment to community oversight have led to the approval of its special use permit by Alexandria's Department of Planning and Zoning on a Friday.

The Del Ray neighbourhood is known for its vibrant atmosphere and diverse food scene. With the addition of Tortas Y Tacos La Chiquita, residents and visitors alike can look forward to authentic Mexican cuisine in a welcoming environment. The restaurant's modified hours ensure that it can cater to those seeking a late-night bite, while also addressing the concerns of the local community.
