Delivered: Monopiles for Iberdrola's 315 MW German Offshore Wind Farm
Navantia-Windar Consortium Delivers XXL Monopiles for Windanker Offshore Wind Farm
The Navantia-Windar Consortium, in partnership with Iberdrola, has successfully delivered the last monopiles for the 315 MW Windanker offshore wind farm in the German Baltic Sea. This marks a significant milestone in the consortium's contribution to the global offshore wind energy sector.
The monopiles, produced at a factory jointly operated by the companies at the Navantia Seanergies shipyard in Fene, Spain, are part of a framework agreement reached by the companies in summer 2021 for the manufacture and supply of XXL monopile foundations. Each monopile unit measures up to 84 metres in length, 10 metres in diameter, and weighs up to 2,100 tonnes.
This collaboration is a testament to the advanced manufacturing and engineering capabilities of the Navantia-Windar Consortium for offshore wind foundations. The consortium has invested EUR 36 million to adapt a building for the bending of thick sheet metal, new painting booths, and storage areas for finished products for the production of these massive monopiles.
Windanker will feature Siemens Gamesa 15 MW wind turbines, and the monopiles will be installed by Van Oord under a contract signed with the developer in 2024.
This partnership between Navantia and Iberdrola has been a decade-long relationship, with Navantia Seanergies having supplied foundations and offshore substations for Iberdrola’s wind farms for over 10 years. This collaboration has been instrumental in strengthening the national supply chain in Spain by promoting local industry participation in offshore wind projects. Iberdrola emphasizes its commitment to Spanish industry through these long-term agreements, which provide stability, international visibility, and generate sustained industrial activity and jobs in the Spanish renewable energy sector.
The Windanker offshore wind farm is part of a larger hub in the Baltic Sea, managed by Iberdrola, with a total installed capacity of over 1.1 GW. The Navantia-Windar Consortium's partnership with Iberdrola on XXL monopile projects like Windanker:
- Demonstrates advanced manufacturing and engineering capabilities for offshore wind foundations.
- Reinforces long-term industrial collaboration that boosts Spain’s national supply chain.
- Supports Iberdrola’s global offshore wind ambitions while enhancing local employment and supplier stability.
This is the second monopile contract between Iberdrola and the Navantia-Windar consortium, following the East Anglia 3 offshore wind farm in the UK. The strategic partnership between the two companies is worth over EUR 1 billion in orders over the last ten years, according to Iberdrola.
The Windanker hub has a combined investment of EUR 3.5 billion. While there is no direct detailed information on East Anglia 3 in the current search results, the mention of Iberdrola’s offshore initiatives and Navantia-Windar’s role in XXL monopile fabrication indicates their involvement in large-scale offshore wind foundation projects, which could include or be similar to East Anglia 3.
- The Navantia-Windar Consortium's partnership with Iberdrola extends to the financing of large-scale renewable energy projects, as displayed by their EUR 1 billion investment in offshore wind foundations over the past decade.
- As part of their financial strategy, the Navantia-Windar Consortium has focused on the production of XXL monopiles for offshore wind farms, showcased recently in the Windanker and East Anglia 3 projects.
- The wind energy industry stands to benefit significantly from strategic partnerships, such as the one between Navantia-Windar Consortium and Iberdrola, as they invest in cutting-edge technologies like XXL monopiles for offshore wind farms.
