Nestlé Staff Take a Stand in Frankfurt over Job Cuts
Demonstration against Nestlé's Decreasing Operations - Demonstrations over Nestlé's Reduced Product Pricing
In a scene filled with frustration, employees of the international food juggernaut, Nestlé, have taken to the streets in protest outside its Germany headquarters in Frankfurt. The cause? Around 230 positions at the Neuss site near Düsseldorf and the Conow site in Mecklenburg-Vorpommern may be on the chopping block. The NGG union views this as part of a longer-term strategy by the world's largest food manufacturer to boost profits at the expense of their workforce.
Andreas Zorn, chairman of the Nestlé Germany works council, expressed his discontent, stating, "For years, Nestlé has been systematically eliminating jobs in Germany and outsourcing production - for instance, to Eastern European countries with considerably lower wages." The workforce numbers in Germany plummeted from 12,400 in 2014 to a daunting 6,500 today.
According to the company's statement, the Neuss site will cease operation by mid-2026, while the Conow plant in Mecklenburg-Vorpommern is set for sale. However, a representative from Nestlé assured that the company will still be producing in Germany. The determination behind these decisions, though not easy, has been confirmed.
Last year, Nestlé's global sales slid by 1.8% to a staggering 91.4 billion Swiss francs. Profits also saw a dip by 2.9%, yet still managed to sit pretty at 10.9 billion francs.

- In the face of dwindling profits and increased job cuts, the NGG union, along with Nestlé staff in Frankfurt, are advocating for community aid to support the development of the fisheries sector, as they believe investing in this industry could help revive the business and maintain employment opportunities.
- Recognizing the financial burden that job losses at the Neuss and Conow sites will impose on the community, protesters are also seeking community aid to provide immediate resources and support during this transitional period.
