Direct sale: Talanx offloads South American subsidiaries
Talanx Shifts Focus in Latin America, Sells Subsidiaries and Strengthens Position in Brazil
Talanx Group, a leading global insurance company, has announced several significant moves in its Latin American operations. The company has sold its subsidiaries in Argentina, Uruguay, and Ecuador, and has strengthened its market position in Brazil through acquisitions.
HDI Seguros Argentina and HDI Seguros Uruguay have been part of HDI International AG, a subsidiary of Talanx Group, since 2011. However, following the sale of these entities to BARBUSS in 2025, Talanx's operations in Latin America now focus on the larger markets of Brazil, Mexico, Chile, and Colombia. The Argentinian and Uruguayan entities are mostly owned by BARBUSS S.A., except for a residual 10% stake in HDI Seguros Uruguay, which remains with Talanx and is undergoing regulatory proceedings expected to close in 2025.
In Ecuador, HDI Seguros S.A. will be acquired by a financial conglomerate from Honduras, Grupo Financiero Atlántida. Similarly, the Retail International division of Talanx Group has sold its Argentinian and Uruguayan entities to BARBUSS, a global holding company that provides insurance, claims management, and financing solutions.
Meanwhile, in Brazil, HDI International AG has acquired the retail business of Sompo Seguros S.A. This acquisition is expected to strengthen HDI's market position in Brazil, as it is projected to rank 7 in the P&C market and 4 in the motor insurance market. The financial terms of both transactions involving Liberty Seguros and Sompo Seguros Retail were not disclosed.
The sale of HDI Seguros S.A. to Grupo Financiero Atlántida enables the Retail International division to consolidate its portfolio in Latin America. The acquisition of Sompo Seguros Retail by HDI International AG also allows HDI Seguros S.A. in Brazil to gain scale in motor and diversify into non-motor P&C and Life Protection business.
In 2024, HDI Seguros Uruguay recorded a gross premium volume of UYU 1,628m (EUR 36m) and employed 46 people. Similarly, HDI Seguros Argentina generated a gross premium volume of ARS 87,708m (EUR 86m) and employed 148 people.
These moves align with Talanx’s strategic focus on profitable growth in key markets rather than smaller operations in the region. The company continues to prioritise growth in the larger Latin American markets, as evidenced by its successful acquisition of the Liberty Seguros business in Brazil and its ongoing efforts to consolidate its portfolio in the region.
