Discussion Proposed by Cerritos Council on replacing 332 Chairs of CCPA, with an estimated cost of $420,000.
In a bid to enhance patron comfort and improve the overall theater experience, the Cerritos City Council has proposed a significant investment of approximately $420,000 to purchase new armchairs for the Cerritos Center for the Performing Arts (CCPA).
The aging armchairs, which have been in use since the center's opening in 1993, have raised concerns due to their wear and comfort level. The upgrading of the seating is viewed as part of the city's ongoing investment in maintaining a high-quality cultural venue. This investment is expected to attract visitors and performers, thereby supporting the local economy and community engagement.
The procurement process for the armchairs is being handled as a no-bid contract under the city's procurement policy. This decision is justified because the vendor chosen, Huntington Beach-based Yamada Enterprises, is a sole-source supplier—the only authorized manufacturer that produces seating compatible with the existing theater infrastructure and that meets stringent specifications for quality, durability, and fire safety.
The armchair replacement project involves the replacement of 206 standard-height armchairs and 126 tall armchairs, totaling 332 armchairs. These armchairs will be used in the Theater Seating Boxes and the Grand Level of the CCPA. The new armchairs are custom designed with wooden frames and harlequin upholstery patterns, providing unobstructed views for patrons in the second row in each box and the last row in the Grand Level.
Notably, the CCPA has faced financial challenges in the past, having lost over $112 million since 2004. Despite this, the CCPA's projected budget for the 23-24 fiscal year stands at $11 million.
In other news, a proposed CCPA festival by Councilwoman Lynda Johnson was tabled at a meeting due to unbudgeted cost concerns. The city council also refuses to disclose individual show ticket sales and revenue at the CCPA.
The California Multiple Award Schedule Cooperative Contract, a procurement program offered by California to streamline purchasing for state and local government agencies, qualifies Yamada Enterprises as a vendor for this project. Additionally, it's worth noting that the Cerritos Sheriff's Station will only receive a net 1.2% increase.
The total cost for the 332 armchairs, including fabric, is estimated to be $420,000, equating to an average cost per chair of $1,265. This investment is expected to significantly enhance the patron experience at the CCPA, contributing to the city's ongoing efforts to maintain a high-quality cultural venue.
- The local government's decision to invest in new armchairs for the Cerritos Center for the Performing Arts (CCPA) is part of their larger strategy to support personal-finance within the community by maintaining a high-quality cultural venue, which in turn attracts visitors and performers, thereby boosting the local economy.
- As part of the city's plan to upgrade the aging seats, the city council has chosen Huntington Beach-based Yamada Enterprises to handle the no-bid contract, due to their status as the sole-source supplier that meets specific quality, durability, and fire safety standards, while also ensuring compatibility with the existing theater infrastructure.
- In light of the financial challenges faced by the CCPA in the past, the investment in new armchairs, totaling approximately $420,000, will be taken from the projected $11 million budget for the 23-24 fiscal year, with the goal of significantly improving the patron experience and contributing to the enhancement of the CCPA as a high-quality cultural venue.
