District Council Prepares for Final Decision on Stadium Site for Washington Commanders' Renewal
Washington Commanders' Return to RFK Stadium: A Step Closer
The Washington Commanders are one step closer to returning to their old home at RFK Stadium, with a final vote by D.C. Councilmembers scheduled for Wednesday. If approved, the team could break ground on a new stadium as early as spring 2026.
The last Commanders game at RFK Stadium was played in 1996, and since then, the venue's last official event was a D.C. United match in 2017. Demolition of the historic RFK Stadium is currently in its final stages, with crews dismantling the structure piece by piece.
The proposed redevelopment plan includes a new stadium for the Commanders, projected to open by 2030, and a 2,500-space parking garage. However, the redevelopment plan does not specify whether an implosion method was considered for the demolition of the stadium.
The aim of the deal is to boost the city's finances and revitalize the surrounding area. Councilmembers have negotiated hundreds of millions in new tax revenue as part of the redevelopment deal. The final version of the RFK stadium deal includes only minor "technical changes".
However, the concerns of Kingman Park residents focus on the potential risk to green space and quality of life in the area. The current plans for the redevelopment have raised concerns among Kingman Park residents, who are advocating for more jobs, housing, and community benefits. One notable update in the final version eliminates hard deadlines for the mixed-use portion of the project.
The team cannot control the rezoning process, as acknowledged in the final version. The chairman of the Washington, D.C. City Council who held the final vote on the RFK Stadium plan on February 7, 2023, was Phil Mendelson. City leaders and residents are watching closely to see if the long-awaited plan to bring the Commanders back to RFK will move forward.
As the vote approaches, the future of RFK Stadium and the Washington Commanders' return to their old home remains uncertain. But one thing is clear: the potential return of the Commanders to RFK Stadium is a significant development for the city and its sports fans.
