DP World Increases Electricity Sourcing from Renewables to 65% as Part of Notable Environmental Effort
In a remarkable display of commitment to sustainability, DP World, a global leader in logistics, has announced significant achievements in its 2024 operations. The company's efforts, detailed in its 2024 ESG Report and related initiatives, reflect a strong focus on decarbonization, renewable energy investment, green infrastructure, and community support.
Sultan Ahmed bin Sulayem, Group Chairman and CEO, stated that these achievements reflect DP World's commitment to embedding sustainability into its core operations.
One of the key areas of progress for DP World is emissions reduction and renewable energy. The company has managed a 15% reduction in emissions since 2022, demonstrating significant progress in lowering its carbon footprint. Moreover, DP World now sources 65% of its electricity from renewable sources, supporting its broader decarbonization plan targeting a 42% reduction in Scope 1 and 2 emissions by 2030. Notably, DP World is the first logistics operator in its region to have climate targets validated by the Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi), underscoring the credibility and ambition of its goals.
Investments in sustainable finance and low-carbon infrastructure are another highlight. DP World issued a US$100 million Blue Bond to finance ocean conservation and sustainable marine practices. Additionally, it published its first Green Sukuk Impact and Allocation Report, detailing the allocation of US$1.17 billion towards low-carbon logistics and infrastructure projects.
Green infrastructure and operational innovations are also a focus for DP World. The company continues to electrify port equipment and expand the use of biofuels. It has expanded rail and barge networks to reduce emissions from freight transportation. AI-powered route optimisation and energy-efficient warehousing technologies are employed to reduce waste and operational costs. DP World's environmental leadership is evident in its participation in the Green Marine certification program for Canadian terminals, including Fairview Container Terminal at Prince Rupert and three additional terminals in Vancouver, Nanaimo, and Saint John. This program focuses on GHG emissions, spill prevention, waste management, and community impact.
DP World's shore power initiative in Prince Rupert significantly reduces diesel fuel use for vessels, projected to prevent 30,000 tonnes of CO₂ emissions annually, equivalent to removing approximately 6,500 cars from roads.
Community initiatives are also a significant part of DP World's sustainability strategy. The company supports education programs through digital classrooms and scholarships. It invests in community infrastructure, notably in water access and sanitation, via its foundation partnerships, directly enhancing local social impact.
DP World's "Our World, Our Future" sustainability strategy integrates these efforts, emphasising innovation, partnerships, and sustained investment in green technologies and community well-being. The company's focus on accountability and transparency is evident in its alignment with IFRS S2 Climate standards and the Global Reporting Initiative (GRI) Standards.
DP World's dedication to sustainable global trade logistics positions it as a leader in this critical area. The company's achievements in 2024 are a testament to its commitment to a greener, more sustainable future.
