Helaba Announces New Deputy CEO, CIO, and COO
In a recent announcement, Helaba (Landesbank Hessen-Thüringen) has appointed Dr. Sonja Rauner as the Deputy CEO, Chief Information Officer (CIO), and Chief Operating Officer (COO). While the specifics of her roles and responsibilities are yet to be fully detailed, it is clear that she will play a key leadership role overseeing IT and operational areas of the bank.
Effective from August 1, 2025, Dr. Rauner will take over from Christian Rhino on November 11, 2024, subject to approval from the European banking authority. She will oversee the areas of Information Technology, Operations, Organization, and the CIO/COO Office at Helaba.
As CIO and COO, Dr. Rauner will be responsible for steering Helaba’s technology and operations, including advancing digital strategies and ensuring strong operational management within the bank. Her roles will also involve contributing to the bank’s executive leadership and strategic direction as Deputy CEO.
One of Dr. Rauner’s strategic initiatives will be Helaba’s partnership with Schwarz Digits, aimed at developing digital solutions to bolster the financial sector’s digital sovereignty. This partnership underscores a focus on leveraging open source technologies, artificial intelligence applications, and adherence to European data protection and security standards—areas that likely fall under her purview given her CIO and COO roles.
In her new position, Dr. Rauner will oversee digital and IT strategy implementation, operational management and efficiency, and key digital transformation projects and partnerships aimed at boosting innovation and compliance in the financial sector.
