Düsseldorf's Facade Solar Initiative Sees Record Interest

Düsseldorf's latest sustainability initiative has seen a surge in interest, with 2,826 applications submitted for funding facade solar installations in just seven months. The city has invested €6.5 million in these projects, with a significant increase in digital applications since March 2025.

A model project in Düsseldorf has installed a 70-square-meter solar array on a building facade, generating around 20 kWp of power. This setup, comprising 38 facade modules and 9 roof modules, produces approximately 12,000 kWh annually, enough to supply three four-person households. The excess energy is stored in a battery system with a 13.8 kWh capacity.

The solar power fuels communal facilities like elevators, staircases, exterior lighting, and heat exchangers for heating and hot water. The city-funded project, part of the 'Climate-friendly Living and Working' program, has seen a 35 percent increase in applications since last year, with 1,805 submissions through the new digital portal alone.

Environmental commissioner Jochen Kral urges more property owners to adopt similar projects to lower electricity costs and help Düsseldorf achieve its climate neutrality goals. With the success of the digital application portal, the city anticipates continued growth in facade solar installations.
