Dangerous Trend: Number of E-Scooter Accidents on the Rise - E-Scooter Accidents in Baden-Württemberg Surge 44.3% in 2025
E-Scooter accidents in Baden-Württemberg have risen sharply, with 841 incidents in the first half of 2025, a 44.3% increase from the same period last year. Tragically, two fatalities were recorded, down from four in 2024. Young people, particularly those aged 14-24, are disproportionately affected, making up nearly a third of serious injuries and over half of minor driving accidents and deaths.
The increase in accidents is alarming, with more than two-thirds caused by driver error. Young, inexperienced riders are especially vulnerable due to the lack of a crumple zone for protection. In 2024, accidents involving electric micro-vehicles surged by 33.4% to 1,465.
To combat these issues, several rules have been implemented. Riding with a passenger is prohibited and incurs a €10 fine. Using a phone while riding can result in a €100 fine and one point. Driving under the influence, with a blood alcohol concentration (BAC) of 0.5% or higher, carries a €500 fine, a one-month driving ban, and two points in Flensburg. Under 21s and probationary drivers are completely prohibited from consuming alcohol while riding. However, specific government measures to reduce accidents in Stuttgart are yet to be announced.
The rise in E-Scooter accidents, particularly among young people, is a pressing concern. While rules are in place to ensure safety, more needs to be done. The government of Baden-Württemberg is urged to implement further measures to educate riders, enforce regulations, and make E-Scooters safer for all users.
