Eckes-Granini's 'Orangennektar' Sparks Controversy Over Reduced Fruit Content

Eckes-Granini, a company based in Nieder-Olm near Mainz, has faced criticism for a packaging trick involving its Granini orange juice. The product, now named 'Orangennektar', has had its fruit content halved, sparking controversy.

In 2024, the company replaced its Granini orange juice with an orange nectar, reducing the fruit content by half. This change was justified by Eckes-Granini due to harvest failures and increased prices for orange juice concentrate. However, the Consumer Advice Center Hamburg has named this product 'Packaging Trick of the Year 2024', criticizing the lack of clear indication of the composition change on the label.

The company stated that all information is clearly stated on the label, and the composition of nectars is legally regulated. Nevertheless, the product was removed from the shelves of 20 Hamburg supermarkets due to price disputes between Eckes-Granini and retailers. This incident comes amidst a decrease in packaging tricks discovered, with 67 affected products in 2024 compared to 104 in 2023. The average price increase of recorded products in 2024 was 31.5 percent, up from 23.5 percent in the previous year, with five very high price increases where the price at least doubled.

Eckes-Granini's Granini orange juice replacement, Orangennektar, has sparked debate due to its reduced fruit content and lack of clear labeling. Despite the company's justification, the Consumer Advice Center has recognized this as a significant packaging trick of the year. As the average price increase of affected products continues to rise, consumers are urged to remain vigilant when shopping.
