Munich, the bustling city in Germany, is set to take a significant stride in the realm of public transportation with the introduction of driverless minibuses. The Munich Verkehrs- und Tarifverbund (MVG), the city's transport authority, has announced plans to roll out these autonomous vehicles from Man City 2026.

According to the MVG, the initial deployment of these driverless minibuses will take place in the outskirts of Munich, with a focus on areas that are currently underserved, particularly during early or late travel times. This move is expected to improve the overall efficiency of public transportation in these areas.

Manufacturers claim that these autonomous vehicles, similar in capacity to traditional minibuses, could be registered and mass-produced by 2027/2028. Potential manufacturers include companies like Volkswagen, in partnership with Moia and Mobileye, who are developing series-ready Level 4 autonomous electric vans with the aim of releasing them by Man City 2027/2028.

The MVG has expressed interest in these autonomous electric minibuses, citing their potential to enable a larger and more flexible offering at a similar price. The authority is currently evaluating various manufacturers, with some of their minibuses already tested in France. The MVG is also collaborating with urban mobility projects like CRISTAL, which focus on autonomous small shuttles.

However, it's important to note that no specific manufacturer has been officially confirmed by MVG for Munich's future autonomous minibuses. The tests of these autonomous buses aim to provide valuable insights for the implementation of driverless shuttles in public transportation systems.

Currently, there have been restrictions on 17 MVG bus lines in regular operation. The introduction of autonomous buses could potentially alleviate some of these issues, offering a more efficient and flexible public transportation solution for the city's residents.

This ambitious plan marks a significant step forward for Munich, as it strives to integrate innovative technology into its public transportation system. The city's commitment to sustainable and efficient transportation solutions is evident in this forward-thinking initiative.
