Enhanced Safety Measures Implemented
In the city of Detmold, a significant change has been implemented on Hornschen Straße, between Neustadt and Johannettental, in response to an accident hotspot on this stretch. The city portal, serving as the primary authority for these changes, has adjusted the mandatory use of cycling paths on Hornschen Straße, with cyclists now only allowed to use the paths in the direction of travel.
The decision, unanimously passed by the road authority, the regional government, the police, and the district of Lippe, was driven by the accident commission, which identified multiple accidents involving cyclists over the past three years, some resulting in serious injuries. Andreas Menke from the city portal emphasizes the importance of safety, stating that "safety comes before convenience in this matter."
The new cycling guidance, specifically direction-based, aims to prevent conflicts between cycling and pedestrian traffic and to increase traffic safety at entrances and exits. The increasing speed of many bicycles (pedelecs and e-bikes) also increases the risk in this area, which the new regulations seek to address.
The narrow side spaces near the Leopoldinum Gymnasium and restricted visibility at several exits are factors contributing to the need for change. To make the new regulation clearly recognizable, markings and signs have been adjusted accordingly.
The city portal acknowledges that the new regulation may require initial adjustment, particularly for students, but emphasizes its importance for traffic safety. The regional government serves as the supervisory authority for these changes to the cycling guidance on Hornschen Straße.
Looking ahead, the city portal will continue to monitor the development on Hornschen Straße and incorporate the results into the medium-term plans for the expansion of the street. Further improvements, such as additional crossing opportunities in the Spork-Eichholz area, are planned for the medium term.
It's important to note that the city portal's decision is binding, and the implementation of the new cycling guidance is underway. The opposite direction of the cycling paths is exclusively available to pedestrians. The aim of the new guidance is to create a safer environment for all road users on Hornschen Straße.
