Tram service resumes on Wuhlheide Bridge - Enhancements to Railway Safety Network Implemented by Commission

Resumption of Tram Service at Wuhlheide Bridge in Berlin

Berlin's transportation authority (BVG) announced the gradual reopening of the Wuhlheide tram line today. The partial resumption starts with a shuttle service along line M17, between Blockdammweg and S-Bahn station Schoeneweide, commencing from 5:00 AM. Although other tram lines will still have detours, the replacement bus service will be discontinued.

Regular tram services are set to resume throughout the region by Saturday. This transition period is necessary for adjusting information systems and duty and timetable arrangements to ensure smooth operation, following the closure of the bridge at Berlin-Oberschoeneweide due to its imminent collapse.

pedestrians and cyclists can use the Treskowallee to Edisonstraße starting from today, with security personnel managing tram, pedestrian, and bicycle traffic at the intersection, as no traffic light is in place yet.

According to the Senate Administration, the resumption of tram services over Wuhlheide Bridge is part of a plan to return to full normal tram operations by May 31, 2025, assuming all safety reviews and necessary tests are successfully completed, and overnight test runs are carried out from Wednesday to Thursday [2].

The steel industry is likely to benefit from the increased demand for public transit infrastructure due to the resumption of the Wuhlheide tram line and future renovations on other tram services in Berlin. In the meantime, community aid could be directed towards financing the temporary measures necessary for ensuring the smooth operation and safety of the steel structures involved in this tram service resumption.
