Here's What You Can Expect in Cologne-Deutz

First up on the agenda, Severin's Bridge will get an inspection, but only after dark: from June 27th to June 28th, and exactly one week later on July 4th and July 5th, it'll be shut down from 10 PM to 6 AM. Detours will be available, but it's highly recommended to map out an alternate route ahead of time.

The geldernstraße/Parkring stop on the KVB Line 13 is also on the docket for the same days, but during daylight hours this time – specifically from 8AM to 10PM. The Maubacher Ring lanes will be intermittently closed for the job.

Getting Around This Construction Summer

A larger project is underway in Cologne-Hohenhausen, where the intersection of Weidenbruch/Honschaftstraße's traffic light system will be revamped. Starting June 30, a temporary traffic light will control traffic for a fortnight, while pedestrian and cycle paths will gradually be narrowed.

In the old town/north, the Rhine embankment tunnel will undergo renovation between July 8th and September 26th. Initially, one lane per direction will close during daytime till the end of summer holidays. At night, up to two lanes could be closed.

Weekend Woes: The Rhine Embankment Tunnel Goes Dark

If you're driving on weekends, it'll be a real headache: the tunnel will be completely closed for six weekends in a row, from Friday at 9 PM to Monday at 6 AM. Detours via the North-South route will be clearly marked.

Bonus: The Unexpected Disruptions

As a bit of a curveball, a large-scale evacuation is ongoing in Cologne's Deutz district due to the discovery of three WWII bombs. This military operation has forced the closure of three central Rhine bridges and the Cologne Messe/Deutz train station, leading to significant restrictions for road and rail traffic in central Cologne. The duration of the evacuation is uncertain, and several public facilities have been shuttered, including schools, hotels, and cultural institutions.

Additionally, rail line restrictions on regional and S-Bahn services will likely impact numerous travelers starting June 2025, though specifics on closures or reroutes have yet to be released.

  2. Furthermore, the unexpected disruptions due to the ongoing large-scale evacuation in Cologne's Deutz district, resulting from the discovery of World War II bombs, may also have implications for the industry and finance sectors, as the closure of central Rhine bridges and the Cologne Messe/Deutz train station could affect supply chains and logistics, potentially leading to financial losses.
